One of the most commonly used building material throughout most construction has the ability to be transformed into a unique and very appealing surface which highlights the aggregates hidden within the concrete.

The process to polish the concrete to expose the different colour stones within the slab creates a terrazzo effect which when sealers or hardeners are applied brings out the immense colours. Existing slabs can be diamond ground to expose the aggregates, or special topping slabs can be installed to get the desired effect or colours the client wishes.

The concrete surface is roughened with aggressive diamonds to remove the top laitance layer covering the stones beneath, once the desired amount of exposure in the stones is achieved the floor with be then polished by finer diamonds to remove the scratch marks in the surface.

There are 2 choices then for what type of polished finish is to be achieved

1.       Surface sealer

2.       Penetrating hardener

The surface sealer will change the surface of the concrete and give it a high gloss effect, these can be UV stable for exposure to outdoor areas.

The penetrating hardener will make the polished concrete surface denser and allow the surface to be buffed using resin pads to achieve a higher gloss level. They make the concrete water tight and stain resistant without changing the surface of the concrete

Polished concrete is perfect many environments:

The polished concrete look is created by treating the concrete surface with a substance known as a “densifier.” After application, the concrete is then ground using a grinding machine. At the beginning of the process the machine is fitted with a relatively large and rough grinding plate. This is to help break down any of the rough materials and allow the creation of a smoother concrete surface. Once the surface has been broken the concrete polishing will start. The grinding machine is fitted with a diamond tipped grinding wheel and run over the surface. As the concrete breaks further and further down the grinding wheel on the machine will be replaced with one that has even finer tips. After the concrete has been cut 4 – 5 times then the machine is fitted with diamond polishing pads and the surface is also treated with a number of additives to enhance the shine. Upon completion, the polished concrete sydney floor will look like a completely different surface and transform the environment.

Decorative Polished Concrete Is Popular In Sydney

Many business and home owners also choose to take the opportunity to create a decorative polished concrete floor while the work is being completed. By adding a dye or stain is it possible to create any number of decorative concrete finishes. These allow the company to portray a branding message or envoke feelings within their workplaces. A large number of businesses also choose to apply decorative features such as bands, borders, grills and other designs. These can further enhance the finished look and add to the final appeal of the surface. Polished concrete is fast becoming more popular than epoxy flooring sydney and is becoming the commercial flooring preference for many. Often times property owners and managers are now choosing a polished concrete floor over epoxy flooring and other concrete resurfacing options.
